CBD and sleep

February 03, 2021

The growing interest in the benefits of CBD has shown that higher dosages of CBD may be of a great aid for sleep. Let's dig into that!

research made in 2012 in particular showed that, compared with a placebo, a CBD dosage of 160 milligrams of CBD increased the total sleep duration. The researchers also found out that 40, 80, and 160 mg of CBD was helping the participants fall asleep.

Cortisol, known as the "stress hormone", peaks in the morning, but if you suffer from insomnia, it may be because you naturally have higher cortisol levels during the night. That is also why It feels like you woke up a hundred times these nights. These nighttime awakenings are due to the cortisol rising randomly at night.

In another research on the effects of CBD done in 2019, researchers found out that cortisol levels were significantly reduced after the intake of 300 or 600mg of CBD oil. You can read more about this research here.

Both of these researches suggest that CBD lessens the release of the cortisol hormone, possibly acting as a tranquilliser and a nighttime aid.

Several smaller researches have also shown the intake of CBD oil could improve one's sleep. This research for example with a 10-year-old girl with bad sleep and PTSD was given 25 mg CBD before going to bed. Then, 6 to 12 mg of CBD was given again via a sublingual spray daytime to try to combat her anxiety.

Over a period of five months her anxiety greatly reduced and her sleep quality improved. Her family reported she was really more easy going, calm, and that she at last could sleep alone in her own room and have some restful nights.

There are, besides CBD, some easy strategies you can try to sleep better, like:

  1. Giving yourself time to unwind before going to bed. Take a hot bath, drink something warm. Switch off the lights and don't use any screen for two hours at least before bed.

  2. Try journaling if you experience some bursts of anxiety during the day.

  3. Try to always go to bed at the same time and get up at about the same time, this will allow you to have a regular sleep and wake cycle, and you will sleep better.

If you are suffering from insomnia, and would like to try CBD as a sleep aid, we advice you to start by taking some CBD oil or CBD capsules as an easy way to take CBD before bed.

Tea is also a great way to take CBD before going to sleep, as you can mix both the properties of CBD and those of teas like chamomile that have a calming effects. If you enjoy tea, we got you covered with the CBD Relax Hemp Infusion from MyCBD with a mixture of hemp, chamomile, lemon balm and orange blossom. It even includes valerian root which enhances the soothing effect of hemp!
